VFW Department of Washington The Honor Degree of the VFW — celebrating dedicated service, fellowship, humor, and care for veterans and their families. The Military Order of the Cootie (MOC) is a veterans service organization known as "The Honor Degree of the VFW.” It recognizes VFW members who have demonstrated leadership and outstanding service to the organization and its programs. Alongside its serious mission of supporting veterans, the Order embraces good humor, camaraderie, and military traditions. Its distinctive red hat and playful customs are intended to draw smiles and encourage fellowship. Organized on September 17, 1920, the MOC grew from the idea of creating an honor degree that combined VFW service with friendship and fun. The Order's official historical account records its acceptance as part of the VFW on September 24, 1921. In 1923, Cootie members proposed the concept that became the VFW National Home. The MOC has a longstanding relationship with the VFW National Home in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, which supports military and veteran families. Throughout its history, Cootie members have helped support projects at the National Home, including recreational facilities, a swimming pool, and fire department improvements. The commitment to veterans' families remains an important part of the Order's service. During World War II, the MOC expanded efforts to visit and entertain hospitalized service members and veterans. The tradition continues through volunteer support for veterans receiving treatment and rehabilitation. "Keep 'em Smilin' in Beds of White” captures the Order's mission: offering companionship, encouragement, and moments of laughter when they are needed most. The MOC welcomes eligible VFW members with a record of active leadership and service. Local units are known as Pup Tents, where members support VFW programs, recruit fellow veterans, volunteer, and enjoy camaraderie. Membership is more than a distinctive uniform; it is a commitment to keep serving fellow veterans and their families. Visit the Order's official resources for current programs, leadership information, history, and membership guidance.
