The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Department of Washington carries forward a legacy that began over a century ago — serving those who served our nation. Our mission and vision guide every program, partnership, and act of service we undertake.
Our Mission: To foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts. To serve our veterans, the military, and our communities. To advocate on behalf of all veterans.
Our Vision: Ensure that veterans are respected for their service, always receive their earned entitlements, and are recognized for the sacrifices they and their loved ones have made on behalf of this great country.
Why It Matters
Our mission is more than a statement — it’s a daily promise. Each Post, member, and Auxiliary partner helps us bring this promise to life by mentoring youth, supporting families, and ensuring that every veteran receives the benefits they’ve earned.
Our Roots
The Veterans of Foreign Wars traces its origin to 1899, when small groups of veterans from the Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection came together to support each other in advocating for benefits, medical care, and a voice in their government.
Over time, legislative victories — including the creation of the Veterans Administration, the national cemetery system, and major GI Bill expansions — cemented the VFW’s reputation as a leading voice for veterans. The VFW continues that mission today, representing millions of service members and families across the United States.
