What CSR Is and Why It Matters

Community Service Reporting tracks the volunteer hours, miles, and funds contributed by VFW Posts across Washington. It demonstrates our impact on veterans, youth, civic programs, and the broader community.

The work our Posts complete strengthens the VFW’s credibility with civic partners, legislators, and the public. It helps secure recognition, promotes program success, and boosts Post-level engagement.

Why Community Service Matters

A Post’s engagement determines how the community views the VFW. When Posts demonstrate care and involvement, they build goodwill, increase member engagement, improve fundraising, and strengthen the VFW’s public image.

Definition of Community Service

The National Community Service Trust Act defines community service as any activity serving the common good. It must benefit the public or its institutions and cannot only benefit the Post or Auxiliary.

Reporting Requirements

To qualify:

  • Work must be performed by a VFW member as a representative of the VFW.
  • The service must help an organization or community outside the Post/Auxiliary.
  • It must be verifiable by an authorized representative of that organization.

Activities that only benefit the Post (maintenance, fundraisers, dinners, bingo, building use) do not qualify.

Common Non-Qualifying Activities

  • Flying U.S. or POW flags
  • Post dinners or events that only benefit the Post
  • Buddy Poppy drives
  • Membership drives
  • Personal volunteer work unrelated to the VFW mission
  • Post maintenance or Post fundraising

Reporting Period

The community service year runs from July 1 to June 30. Posts should report events daily, not weekly or monthly, to avoid forgetting details.

Auxiliary Reporting

Posts are encouraged to report Auxiliary community service. This is not mandatory but helps show the full impact of the VFW and Auxiliary.

Value of Volunteer Time

  • Volunteer hour value (Independent Sector 2023): $31.80 per hour
  • Mileage reimbursement for charitable service (IRS): $0.14 per mile

Total Impact Formula

Dollars Spent + Volunteer Hours + Mileage = Total Event Impact

  • Scholarships and youth support
  • Blood drives
  • Legislative outreach
  • Community clean-ups
