Department of Washington
The VFW Life Saving Award is one of the highest recognitions conferred by both the Department of Washington and the National Veterans of Foreign Wars. It honors those who display remarkable heroism, skill, or bravery in saving or attempting to save a human life.
About the Award
The Life Saving Award recognizes acts of valor performed by veterans, members, or civilians whose courage rises above personal safety and exemplifies the principles of service and sacrifice that define the VFW. These actions may occur in any setting—on or off duty—where an individual’s intervention directly contributed to saving or preserving life.
Eligibility
- Open to members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the VFW Auxiliary, and civilians.
- The act must involve the saving or attempted saving of a human life under dangerous or extraordinary circumstances.
- Actions must demonstrate courage, quick thinking, and a disregard for personal safety.
- Incidents must have occurred within the current or previous membership year.
Nomination and Documentation
To nominate an individual, complete the official Life Saving Award Entry Form and attach documentation detailing the event. Supporting materials may include:
- Official reports, witness statements, or media coverage.
- Photographs, commendations, or letters from responding agencies.
- Verification from local authorities or medical personnel, when applicable.
Submission Process
Once the nomination packet is complete, submit it to the Department of Washington Headquarters. The Department will review each submission for accuracy, verify documentation, and handle all routing to the VFW National Headquarters for final approval and recognition.

Recognition
Approved recipients receive a Life Saving Award medal, certificate, and citation from the Commander-in-Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, presented through the Department Commander. The award serves as a lasting symbol of valor and humanity.
