Supporting Project Sanctuary

A Message from Commander Drew James

There was a point in my life when things were not going well at home. Like many veterans, I carried things from my service that I thought I could just push through. I stayed busy. I buried myself in work. I told myself everything was fine.

But inside, I was in a very dark mental place. The stress and frustration were showing up at home whether I meant for them to or not. My wife could see it long before I was willing to admit it. She was frustrated. I was distant. Conversations turned into arguments. We were drifting apart and neither of us really knew how to fix it.

Then we found Project Sanctuary.

Through their program, we spent time together in a setting designed specifically for veterans and their spouses. We learned how to talk to each other again. We learned how to listen. We learned that the struggles many of us face after service are not something we have to deal with alone.

Project Sanctuary did more than provide a weekend program. It gave us tools. It gave us understanding. Most importantly, it gave us a path back to each other.

That experience didn’t just help us manage a difficult period in our lives. It helped rebuild our marriage and brought us closer than we had been in years.

When I chose Project Sanctuary as my Commander’s Special Project, it was because I know firsthand the difference this organization makes. There are veterans and families across Washington who are in the same place we once were; struggling quietly, unsure where to turn.

With your support, we can help more of those families find the same support, healing, and renewed connection that my wife and I experienced.

Thank you for standing with our veterans and their families.
