Responsibilities

Being a Chaplain

You serve as the spiritual advisor to your organization and its members. Build relationships, listen with compassion, and serve as a bridge of faith and care for all.

Qualifications
  1. A willingness to serve.
  2. Spiritual maturity and commitment to the Chaplain’s ministry.
  3. Confidentiality, neutrality, and compassion.
Duties
  • Offer comfort in times of stress or loss.
  • Coordinate with Service Officers to aid members and families.
  • Lead prayers at meetings and ceremonies.
  • Visit hospitals and send cards to the sick or bereaved.

The Chaplain of the Year award honors chaplains who embody compassion, faith, and service across all traditions and beliefs.

Criteria for Nomination

  1. Demonstrates compassion and professionalism serving veterans and families.
  2. Provides spiritual and emotional support regardless of faith or background.
  3. Maintains a positive representation of the VFW.
  4. Exhibits moral leadership and community outreach.
  5. Member in good standing at Post, District, and Department levels.

  • October — Nominations Open
  • April 1 — Submission Deadline
  • April 30 — Review Completed
  • June — Award Presented
